Want to know what we are doing the rest of the year?  Then Click Here.

Did you know that Sunken Treasure Scuba Center began in 1978, was recognized as a PADI Instructor Development Center in 1992 and since then 32 people have gone on to become PADI Instructors? Which Instructors do you know? Who has signed your log book? How about the 60 divers who earned their Divemaster rating, but more Interesting is that only 27 divers earned the PADI Master Scuba Diver rating which is PADI's highest non-professional rating. Stop in the store sometime and find out how you might earn the Master Scuba Diver rating. Find out who these divers are at http://www.divestsc.com/wall-of-fame

Sunken Treasure Scuba Center is located in Jersey Shore, PA and has a population just over 4,000.

warranty.png

What's it worth to YOU ?

REMINDER.  In order to keep your equipment in it's best operating order, and the warranty valid, it must be serviced each and every year, even if it hasn't been used.  When servicing a regulator at Sunken Treasure, we take the regulator completely apart, clean and check all parts, and  replace any worn or bad parts.  The regulator is then reassembled, adjusted, and tested.  Most regulators that only require to be serviced every other year are still required to be inspected by a authorized dealer every year. The gauges on your regulator are a separate item and should be returned to the manufacturer every two years for testing and re-calibration. If something doesn't seem correct then it should be checked right away.  Tank VIP's are required once a year and do not include valve service, which should be done every 3-5 years, depending on use. BCD warranty checks include checking for leaks, over pressure relief and dump valves working OK, and cleaning and lubrication of the power inflator.

Prices for these services run from FREE to $40.00 depending on the item. The cost of parts on items not under warranty is not included.

Completing Your PADI Scuba Course

RepCard_2016_Luke_02.1-768x497.jpeg

Please remember that you have only 12 months to complete open water training dives to complete your certification or you will be required to take a scuba review (cost $39.95). As time nears you can call the store to make arrangements to do your dives. Group training dives during the summer June 1st thru August 31st are $45.00/dive and $55.00/dive from September 1st thru May 31st. Please call or email us about one week before the desired dates. If these dates don't work you can schedule dives by appointment. Cost is $50/dive in the summer and $60/dive in the winter. All equipment needed for these dives is included in the cost. Four Dives are required for certification which we do two dives a day. First day all divers meet at Sunken Treasure Scuba Center. You can find our scheduled training dives by clicking here.

Covid 19.png

Well, the good news is that you can't catch coronavirus underwater! Nevertheless, it makes sense to take precautions when you're off diving, whether that be on a distant liveaboard or at the local club. Covid-19 is spread just like the common cold and influenza in that it can be caught from a person's sneezing or coughing, and can exist for short periods of time outside of the body where it could be picked up and transmitted by surface contact. Above and beyond the hygiene standards advised by the WHO, the following recommendations from DAN and PADI should help prevent transmission and infection by divers.

✅Use mask defog solution or soap, not saliva and spit to clear your mask
✅Thoroughly disinfect masks (especially the nose pockets), snorkels, regulators and BCD oral inflators before and after use.
✅Other potentially infectable items might include orally-inflatable SMBs and BCD whistles. Be thorough.
✅Make sure the interiors of regulators and snorkels are properly cleaned, not just the mouthpiece.
✅Take care when practicing air-sharing exercises or buddy checks where two people might share the same regulator.
✅Pay particular attention to rental gear. You may wish to ask for it to be disinfected prior to use, even if the staff say it was properly washed after its last outing.
✅Commonly used antibacterial cleaning products - such as mouthwash - are ineffective against coronaviruses. A 10% bleach solution or other appropriate cleaning agent cleaner should be used (household cleaning products, alcohol, etc) and - needless to say - thoroughly rinsed afterward.
✅Avoid communal rinse tanks that are not bleached or otherwise cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis.
✅Carry disinfectant wipes in your kit bags when you're away from the dive centre. Make sure you dispose of them carefully.

Make sure you keep yourself as up-to-date as possible with the latest advice and dig a little deeper than the news media's headlines for information. As per the introduction, the Covid-19 pandemic is something that each of us needs to take seriously, but as most divers will know, panic will solve absolutely nothing: stop, think (check a lot of stuff), then act.

Some tips that might make equalizing a little easier

  1. Start early
Several hours before your dive, begin gently equalizing your ears every few minutes. “This has great value and is said to help reduce the chances of a block early on descent,” says Dr. Ernest S. Campbell, webmaster of “Diving Medicine Online.” “Chewing gum between dives seems to help,” adds Dr. Campbell.

2. Equalize at the surface
“Pre-pressurizing” at the surface helps get you past the critical first few feet of descent, where you’re often busy with dumping your BCD and clearing your mask. It may also inflate your Eustachian tubes so they are slightly bigger. The guide here is to pre-pressurize only if it seems to help you and to pressurize gently.

3. Descend feet first
Air tends to rise up your Eustachian tubes, and fluid-like mucus tends to drain downward. Studies have shown a Valsalva maneuver requires 50 percent more force when you’re in a head-down position than head-up.

4. Look up
Extending your neck tends to open your Eustachian tubes.

5. Use a descent line
Pulling yourself down an anchor or mooring line helps control your descent rate more accurately. Without a line, your descent rate will probably accelerate much more than you realize. A line also helps you stop your descent quickly if you feel pressure, before barotrauma has a chance to occur.

6. Stay ahead
Equalize often, trying to maintain a slight positive pressure in your middle ears.

7. Stop if it hurts

8. Don’t try to push through pain. Your Eustachian tubes are probably locked shut by pressure differential, and the only result will be barotrauma. If your ears begin to hurt, ascend a few feet and try equalizing again.

9 Avoid tobacco and alcohol

Both tobacco smoke and alcohol irritate your mucus membranes, promoting more mucus that can block your Eustachian tubes.

10. Keep your mask clear

Water up your nose can irritate your mucus membranes, which then produce more of the stuff that clogs.

11. Learning to equalize while diving is something we can take for granted. Our ears are full of amazing components that need to be treated properly. If you experience any issues with your ears before diving, talk to some professionals. Or ask your doctor. Ask him about barotraumatics.

1. Listen for the “pop”

Before you even board the boat, make sure that when you swallow you hear a “pop” or “click” in both ears. This tells you both Eustachian tubes are open.

2. Start early

Several hours before your dive, begin gently equalizing your ears every few minutes. “This has great value and is said to help reduce the chances of a block early on descent,” says Dr. Ernest S. Ratio Dive Computers

Ratio_banner.jpg

Our Gear Is Extremely Personal. Find Just The Right Dive Computer For You!
Ratio is a small Italian company that manufactures a range of incredible dive computers with some very unique features for recreational and technical divers. Being a smaller manufacturer they are able to adapt and experiment much more easily and quickly compared to the main brands who have to go through lengthy R&D and sign off procedures so they are able to bring new technologies to the market much more quickly.

Currently their range only has three models but each of those is split into varying levels of complexity from purely recreational all the way to rebreather support. There is the watch style iDive Sport  and the iDive Color which covers everything from free diving to rebreathers. The larger iX3M wrist mounted computer which is more technical focused but the entry level Deep version still provides everything a recreational nitrox diver would need. They share a lot of features but the obvious differences are the size and the screen.

Sunken Treasure is a Ratio Computer dealer so stop in and check them out or vist their web site at http://www.ratio-computers.com/scuba.htm

Fourth Element J2 BaseLayer

J2.jpg

With excellent anti-microbial performance thanks to the use of silver ion technology, and outstanding wicking from a unique fabric, the J2 baselayer is designed for extended use under a drysuit.

Keeping the skin dry can be critical to success, whether it is staying warm, or preventing infections. The J2 baselayer was designed to wick perspiration away from the skin and maintain a dry zone next to the skin. Air is a better insulator than water and consequently, the baselayer ensures better thermal protection.

The J2 baselayer system takes this performance further with tried and tested anti-microbial silver ions embedded within the fibres of the fabric. This enables long, repetitive wear without the risk of skin infections developing – something which was critical on the US Deep Caving Team’s 2013 expedition to explore the Cheve cave system in Mexico, for which the J2 was specifically developed.

The J2 wicking performance also comes into its own when the fabric gets wet. Water is wicked away from the skin, and with the right combination of drysuit underwear, further away though the fibres of the undersuit. Even in the event of a suit flood, the J2 will retain some of its performance.

Silver ions are incorporated into the fibres when they are manufactured, ensuring that the bacteriostatic and antifungal properties of the fabric last. This cannot be washed off. The silver ions prevent the formation of bacterial cell membranes, preventing most bacteria from growing in the fibres of the garment. However, this will not adversely affect the naturally occurring bacteria on the skin itself.

So stop in Sunken Treasure and lets talk about a new OS Systems drysuit. We also offer a free Drysuit specialty course with every suit purchased.

So do I want a wet suit, semi dry or drysuit. A wet suit is the norm just based on cost while a semi dry will keep you warmer without the expense of a dry suit but the dry suit will keep you the warmest and should last the longest. Here are a couple of videos to help with the choice.

semidry3.jpg

This is the 8/7mm Men's Henderson THERMOPRENE PRO Semi-Dry Hooded Fullsuit. this suit is made with 250% super stretch thermoprene pro insulation (8mm body/7mm hood), this suit is beyond stretchy. The Thermoprene Pro neoprene is a durable non-pill nylon exterior laminate with an Aqua Silk interior for a soft and luxurious feel. This semi-dry suit also has double glued and double sewn seams which eliminates any cold water coming in. Other features include: a PK S-Lock full front zipper with an internal neoprene bib which prevents water entry, a hood with a Flow Vent Purge Valve, zipperless wrist and ankle seals, super durable Duratex kneepads that are oversized. This hooded semi-dry suit was designed for performance in the coldest of waters and was created so you don't have to rely on others to help get you in the wetsuit!

Zeagle’s Stiletto BCD

stiletto.jpg

Zeagle is a brand that is well known for its high end equipment, especially the BCD’s.  Up until recently Zeagle has been known for BCD’s being exclusively back inflate, recently Zeagle has released their first vest inflation bcd the Halo. Most of the time when divers hear the name Zeagle they think of the Ranger, and Zena a women’s specific bcd,  but this review looks to evaluate one of the lesser known classics from Zeagle the Stiletto.

The Zeagle Stiletto is a back inflation BCD that has the Zeagle patented rip chord weight system.  Most people are more familiar with Zeagle’s ranger BCD and the Stiletto is a slimmed down version of the standard ranger, with a less heavy duty bladder.  The general Specs for the Stiletto are as follows:

  • Dry Weight: 7.4 lbs

  • Lift: 35lb

    Weight capacity:

  • 24lb Ripcord System

  • 16lb Rear weight pockets

Like many of the Zeagle BCD lines the stiletto has interchangeable and replaceable parts including cummerbund, shoulders and back pad.  The double tank straps are moveable to accommodate shorter tanks and the rear weight pockets can be removed and replaced if deemed necessary.  I found these adjustable options on the Stiletto to allow me to customize a standard BCD to fit my personal preferences.

There are Two key features that in my opinion put the Zeagle line of BCD’s above others.  The first is the iconic rip chord weight system that allows for the quick release of integrated weights with a single hand pull.  Many other BCD designs use a dual pocket release system requiring the user to have both hands free to release all integrated weights.  The other unique feature for Zeagle BCD’s are the quick screw inflator with standard hose attachment.  This feature allows for the user to unscrew the BCD inflator and attach a hose in order to flush salt and grime out of the bcd bladder more easily, and replace the BCD inflator when repairs are needed.

Pros:
Easily adjustable parts for custom fit
Adequate amounts of D-rings
Rip chord weight systems
Easily replaceable inflator
Inflator hose attachment
Double tank strap
Removable rear weight pouches
Custom color options (also available for Ranger and Zena)

Cons:

Smaller Lift Capacity (35 lbs) Adequate for warm water diving but might not be enough for some instances of cold water diving.
Re-lacing the weight pocket system can seem a little awkward at first.

Stop in today and check it out at STSC.

Sea Salt

From Forward by Peter Benchley (Author of Jaws) "Ladies and gentlemen, are you in for a treat! You are about to make the acquaintance of one of the most extraordinary gentlemen of this or any recent age. And not just a gentleman but a filmmaker, an adventurer, an explorer, a daredevil, a gallant, a poet, an intimate of creatures as exquisitely exotic as the leafy sea dragon and the sloe-eyed cuttlefish and – this above all – a true pioneer in the discovery of our last frontier, the sea. Stan Waterman has spent more than half a century in, on and under the sea, and in these pages he takes you with him on the amazing ride he calls his life. There is excitement enough in his encounters with wild animals and weird people to fill a hundred lives and all their fantasies. To cite just one example, have you ever wondered what it would be like to dive in the open ocean with a huge school of certifiably anthropophagous sharks as they gorge on the carcass of a whale … at night? Probably not. But hang on, because when Stan recounts scenes from the filming of the classic 1971 documentary feature film, Blue Water, White Death, you’ll be there beside him, and astonished that anyone lived to tell the tale. Stan is on intimate terms with many of the seas’ most formidable denizens, including that ultimate marine predator, the Great White Shark, and he writes wonderfully about the contradictions inherent in this magnificent creature: the incomparable natural beauty, the perfection of function, all manifest in the creature’s capacity as a killing machine. Sea Salt is far more, however, than just a catalogue of critters and close calls. Stan has a profound rapport with the sea, and his command of language and literature eloquently conveys the depth of his feeling. The thoughtful, graceful writing sets the book a full step above most memoirs about the sea; not only does Stan appreciate good writing – you’ll be pleased to encounter an occasional quote from Joseph Conrad or Henry Beston – but he’ll often turn a phrase or craft a paragraph that could well have come from the pen of a master."

Aqualung issues Calypso Regulator Recall

December 30 2021

Aqualung is conducting a recall of specific batches of Calypso regulators on both Din & Yoke versions. These may have a quality defect due to a variation in the manufacturing process. Only some Calypso regulators with specific CPN’s (common part numbers) and serial numbers are affected by this recall.

Potential issue: A hole has been drilled out of specification in the high-pressure port, leaving a wall thickness in a vulnerable state. An uncontrollable free flow of the second stage could occur if this thin wall section should rupture under pressure. A pressure test has proved that an affected body will not rupture during a dive, however, it cannot be guaranteed in the long term.

Consumers are advised to immediately stop using their Calypso regulators, only if the serial number they own is part of the recall and return it to an authorized retailer asking for a replacement free of charge.
